SPEAKER_03

Hello, folks, out there in the listening world, Wesley Bray here, your host for Core Scope Insights, where we're always at the core of industry, expanding the scope. So tonight, folks, we've got a very special guest in the studio with us, Mr. John Knowler. John, do you want to tell us a little bit about Phoenix Roofing and what you guys do and what you always offer to the Midlands?

SPEAKER_00

Yes, sir. Thank you, Wesley, for the invite. We're very happy to all be on the podcast with you here today. So our business, we've been in business for over four years now coming up. We started this with my own actual dream of being a roofer in the Midlands and throughout the actual Carolina area. So we wanted to make a footprint with the actual Midlands by helping the community and get involved with actual roof replacements, roof repairs, taking care of low-income houses and nonprofits, and we've been able to help so many homes over the years, and we've been able to establish ourselves as one of the prominent roofers out here. That's right, that's right.

SPEAKER_03

I gotta ask the question what made you want to get into roofing?

SPEAKER_00

Oh man, I was all excited about it whenever I was a roofer down in Florida. Down in Florida, I roofed down in Tampa, Florida for seven, eight years, so I've experienced it hands-on. Did it for that time, shingles with the metal, the tile, the flat roof did it all? So I know the ins and outs of it. Moved up here and was excited to stay in South Carolina because of the southern hospitality. And when I started it up here, I was doing sales with another roofing company, started with another individual, and then started my own. And it's just a burning desire to actually do that. And then we came to fruition with the people that were motivated around me and gave me that motivation also.

SPEAKER_03

That's right. I I I know just knowing you and talking with you, your passion always comes out about what you do. And and the the fact that you it shows that you love helping people and doing stuff with the nonprofits. And nine times out of ten, when we have a conversation, that's the first thing you bring up is hey, we've done another project for a nonprofit. I mean, I I've caught on to that. So the passion that you have bubbles out of you as is contagious almost. So I think it's really great what you're doing for the community, folks. So uh, hey, we got John here in the studio tonight, and if you guys are in need of roofing, I can tell you you won't find anybody more passionate that wants to take care of your roofing and do a great job for you and at an affordable cost, and somebody that will stand behind their work. So uh I just wanted to ask, where does the name Phoenix Roofing come from?

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, so when I moved from Florida originally, like I mentioned, is uh I wanted to start over. I wanted to start back and have a second actual coming for my own self. Yep. Because I moved, lived down there and I was like, all right, this is what I was used to. And I'm like, all right, well, I want to start over with my life and have an actual foundation where I can feel like I'm taking care of not just myself, but creating an actual standard for my life. And whenever I started up here, I have a large tattoo on my back with a Phoenix too, I'll tell you that. So that's cool. But it was just an actual dream to do that with a Phoenix roofing being the actual standard of starting back over. Because I thought whenever I started, I wanted to be something coming out of the ashes and being for my own self to make it new. And same with roofing. You're taking off an old roof and you're starting back with a brand new roof, same type of same idea. That's right. Our slogan is also rise above the rest, Phoenix Roofing. So we try to be different than everybody else.

SPEAKER_03

And that's what I was that was leading me to my next question. What how do you guys separate yourself? What do you, I mean, what do you feel like, you know? I know you're always talking about going above and beyond, and you're always talking about taking care of the customer. So let the listening audience know how you take care of your customers and what sets Phoenix Roofing apart from anybody else out here that's just trying to get some jobs. Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Well, what we do to separate ourselves is that hands-on experience, like I mentioned before. Like I have the experience with actually knowing about that. Uh 50 hours of OSHA training, so we try to be safe on these jobs. Roofing is something that you gotta be very careful and mindful about. The lie building and insurance that we carry to take care of the actual homeowners while we're out there, because these roofers, they're up there working on pitches that it's hard to walk on. They're walking on these things and roped off, harnessed properly, and they have the actual things to where they want to make sure to take care of their own safety as well as the property. So we're making sure to do that differently than other people. Um, there's other standards that we do. We make sure to take a lot more pictures and do our inspections on the front end. We're trying to change that up even more to the data as we are now. We're changing it up where our inspections were going to be using those meta glasses, you know, where you can go on the roof, speak to it, have a video, come down and show the homeowner like a more hands-on, like this is what your roof looks like, and that way you have better ideas of what needs to actually be done, other than just my word on hey, I come back down, and now you kind of see exactly what because they're not gonna go on the roof. So that's another aspect we're doing. Another thing we do is we do all, like I said, the the actual nonprofits, Habitat for Humanity. We've been working for them for years now. Right. We do all of their uh new construction, we got 10 more projects coming up again, and we're so blessed to do that. We got a second Saturday with another nonprofit and Salvation Army, so many other ones. The other thing I can state is we're able to get our costs different than the higher-end companies, and not to say that that's not someone you wouldn't want to deal with because those companies is what we want to build up to, right? But we think that we're able to build our cost and our estimates up to beat that actual pricing because we're not gonna have to pay for all those high overheads of all that other large companies, right? So that makes us a better affordable price, established with the years that we have on the actual industry, and we know that we're gonna be able to stand up behind our word. We've had one or two leaks after a roofs, right? And it happens, and it's gonna happen. And we know we do that, we want to take care of those people, and we have. We had a leak, took care of the leak afterwards, and once that leak was fixed, fixed the interior and made sure they were happy afterwards, got a five-star review afterwards, and they were like we're happy with the service because they communicated and we didn't feel like we were getting taken advantage of by one of these contractors because there's a fear of it out there. Tell you that.

SPEAKER_03

Right. So uh if if a home as a homeowner um myself, uh I don't know. So I'm gonna ask a question as if I'm just dumbfounded because I really am in this situation. So y'all, y'all excuse me. I'm my my stupidity is gonna come out in a question here. How does a homeowner know when it's time to replace their roof?

SPEAKER_00

They would not know until they haven't inspected. I'll tell you what, the the insurance companies nowadays, they're having it where you have to replace them even sooner than normal because they don't want to have that standard of basically having to worry about the liability for their own insurance. What I do find is that they need to have their roofs looked at after any major storm. So if you have a major storm that comes through, or if you see shingles on the ground or anything like that, we do free roof inspections. So that's something that the majority of the companies do as a standard. So we go out, do that inspection, give them the proper information if they need to do a repair, if they need to just hold off the roof's good. We tell them the roof's good. You know that peace of mind. That way you don't have to worry about it. And down the road, you call us again when you're ready to do the roof, and we'll give you the best affordable pricing of that time. We make sure that they got the right information to go forward with.

SPEAKER_03

That's cool. What is what is um out of just out of curiosity, what is something that homeowners have to worry about, maybe here terrain-wise in the Midlands? I know we have high heat, and you know, is does that does our roofs need to be replaced more often than say somebody living in a milder uh climate or anything? Does that have anything to do with it?

SPEAKER_00

Not so much on that. We have got a good shingles that are put on these roofs. What we see is the issue more often than not is that the actual shingles that they put on back in the 2000s, right at the beginning, those standards weren't as high as they are today. Right. So we're at 2026. So if you put a roof on at that time, those shingles are outdated. If you have a three-tab shingle that was new construction, it's not gonna last above an actual window for 60 miles per hour. So we put on higher grade shingles that are gonna withstand that 130 miles per hour. That's our standard. We don't want to have a lower end roof because those shingles are gonna have issues.

SPEAKER_03

Sure.

SPEAKER_00

So we know that that's being outdated. They're actually not making those shingles as much as they used to, they only have two colors, and we actually have a hot higher grade with all the other actual factors with the nail strips for the nails to be installed through those strips. So you only have to install four nails, and you only have to have the actual roofs installed with these actual homes with these standards. So we make sure to build it higher with the grade, the synthetic, the ice and water, all these things are online for us, also, so you can see all that product on our actual website and see how we build these houses. So you can see all that on our website where the church, we did Riverbend Church recently. Right. So you see all these videos with an actual presentation of what it looks like taking it off and putting it back on. Oh, that's awesome.

SPEAKER_03

That's awesome. So um, how would uh and another stupidity question from a homeowner here? Um, how would a homeowner know whether they need a repair or whether they need a total roof replacement?

SPEAKER_00

So that's also on if they initially see that they have a leak. So that or something along the lines of if it's 15 years old, it still has life left majority of the time. So roofs usually last you 20, 25, sometimes up to 30 years. Right. But once you see those actual leaks, that's when you know, okay, well, I have a leak here, and then we do see, hey, we need to repair this area. It's gonna be one, two, three, four, five repairs. Maybe we want to replace this. Maybe we want to give you a little bit more life, but if you want to have that, or if you want to have a roof, it's your own uh education of what you're affordable to take care of for your own home. Right. But if you can't afford that, I mean we're gonna make sure to take care of the main needs of your home. We've actually worked in this neighborhood just recently and did one of the roofs over here. Really? So that's awesome. Yeah, we were just in the neighborhood to build a house, uh roof over here because they wanted to sell their actual home and they couldn't get nobody to buy it because of the roof being older. Really? So that being the case, we just had to put a brand new roof on, and now they sold the house right afterwards.

SPEAKER_03

So that's many times the case, you know, the roof. Yeah, and a lot of times I know inspectors will come in and you know, when they're they're do the inspection, we've had that happen to us, right? You know, um, we lived over in the White Knoll area, and after we had a real bad storm, this has been, gosh, 20 some years ago probably. But when we got ready to sell, no, I take that back because we moved in 2007. So when we moved in 2007, that was one of the issues. You know, there were some issues with the roof because we had been there since uh 1998, right? And we had to have some work done on that roof before we sold the house. But a lot of times you get the roof work done in the house cells like that.

SPEAKER_00

It's like, you know, it's that noticeable. As soon as you see something like that, and the those roofs that we put on now look better than what they did before, they got better color schemes and things like that. Absolutely, like I said, we put put on metal roofs. I'm putting on a copper roof over in Chapin here soon. So that was something different. I was like, we haven't done a copper. It's the color copper, it's not copper itself, because that'd be expensive. That's awesome.

SPEAKER_03

So, John, thank you again for being in the studio tonight. Um, you know, we talked about uh some of the types of roofing you do, and you were just talking about copper roofing. What other types of roofing do you guys offer? Uh, and talk a little bit about what your norm is for shingles a little bit, maybe.

SPEAKER_00

Sure. So our normal standard, like I mentioned, is architectural shingles. We partnered with an actual brand, their name is IKO. Um, we do install all types of shingles, there'll be the GAF is an actual brand, Owens Corning. Those are the high grade shingles that we do know of, um, and certainty. We partnered with IKO mainly because we know that their actual service and actual warranties that we've had to only deal with once over 11 years. So we know that their standards are higher. They actually came out of Canada and they moved to the area here and they just opened up a Chester plant. So they're one of the actual established manufacturers out in this area, so we know that they have an actual footing in this actual community. It's kind of like what we wanted to do, put a footing in the community. So they've built that to where they're gonna make a standard for the actual shingles out here. We do the metal roofing as well. So I've done a few of those with a couple companies that are excuse me, customers that wanted to actually do that work. It's a little bit more expensive, obviously. I would say it's gonna grow possibly for us over the next few years, but we do want to say that this is gonna still be staying in the shingle market for this area. Right, it's gonna be something that's growing in prices, though, as well. Right. Um, with the uh the economy as it is, and you know how things are working for us, we go off of gas prices. Sure. So gas is going up, asphalt's going out. Asphalt is in the shingles, so we're polymer's going up too.

SPEAKER_03

I just heard polymer today. Copper prices are going up. Um, you know, I sell line sets, yeah. So we do all of them as well.

SPEAKER_00

Well, one other thing we did was a small repair for uh actual customer recently, and uh JT Kia. I don't know if you know that gentleman. Yeah, he caught us up and we did a tile repair over there on the lake. So he had a roof leak that could not get fixed, and we came out, some more issues now. So we and that was only because of the expertise that I personally knew beforehand. Showed my roofers, this is what we need to do. Tear it off, put it back, look great. Mr. JT Key was happy. So, you know, take care of it, everybody out there. That's awesome. Yes, sir. That's awesome.

SPEAKER_03

I know a lot of a lot of homeowners get overwhelmed too with insurance claims. Yeah, um, maybe you want to touch on that, how you guys help customers handle their insurance issues and things like that, working with insurance companies. I'm sure you guys do some of that as well, don't you?

SPEAKER_00

I sure do. Um, we deal with uh insurance companies as far as what the homeowner needs to expect with their moving forward, because it's an actual process that not everybody knows. Right. They don't know, hey, do I need to file this claim or do I need to come out of pocket? What's my deductible? What's this? What's it gonna entail on my premiums to that may go up? So we have experience to see, hey, this could be something that it could be better for you to pay out of pocket or it could be better for you to just fall off a claim. Right. If you get approved by the claim, they're gonna pay you out that actual claim. But there's a process of that. So we go out, do that first inspection, see if they do need to file a claim, if they have wind damage or hail damage. These are the normal constituent things for what the roof will be paid for. If they don't have that type of damage, then they're not gonna get paid for. Certain standards for insurances are gonna be higher. All state, state farm, nationwide, USAA, they're all different. So we've dealt with every one on type of the actual man, actual insurance company, so we know what to look for. If they do meet those criteria points, we're gonna advise them, hey, and our expertise, we feel like you should be able to file a claim. You may be able to get this paid for, and that way, less out of pocket for you, and then you get a brand new roof. So, but we're not gonna leave people just uh door knock on the actual house and be like, hey, we want to get some business just because we're in the neighborhood. We want to make a standard of that community, like I mentioned before. Sure. So there's companies and don't say that nothing, that's a business model to knock on doors. We're not that company, we're the one that's wanting to make take care of the homeowners as they need us, not try to make business for ourselves. But it's out there, we're gonna find it.

SPEAKER_03

Well, I think I think the way you do business and conduct yourself, and what I've heard from you know folks in the in the group you know, we're in, you know, I I've been just highly impressed with what I've heard. I think you got a standard that's already above the rest. Um so kudos for that. Thank you, Ask. Um I want to ask, uh I know I know I've seen it done and I've seen but the you know, I guess a homeowner might ask, how long does a typical roof replacement take?

SPEAKER_00

Well that'll be contingent on the size of the home, I'm sure. Exactly. So it'll be contingent on the actual roof, how what the standards of what the repair is gonna be. If it's just small pipe booth repairs, I mean that's gonna take us 20, 30, 45 minutes. Just matters on the steepness of the roof, two-story, things along that nature. Um, tarping roofs. It usually takes about an hour to do a proper tarping, and that way you are protected from any potential rain that comes in, because if you don't do uh project main uh preventative maintenance on your property and you have more additional leaks, then you're liable after the actual insurance because you need to protect that after you actually have the home looked at, because if you don't, you're uh getting it to where it could be more damage on the inside. So these things are standards that we do help out with. And then, like I mentioned before, if you have anything that needs to be repaired other than the pipe boots, if it's a larger valley, things like that, it could take half a day to rip that all out, put it back on. But we take our time on the repairs because if we don't, we're gonna be coming back. We're gonna be coming back. So we don't want to do that the right way. Take it and make sure it's gonna be not leaking on the back end. Because those repairs, once we work there, we do warranty it for six months, making sure it's not gonna have any problems after I'm done. So that way you're warrantied if there's another storm that comes through, that way you're taken care of by our company.

SPEAKER_03

That's awesome. Are you ready for a two-part question? Okay. What is the most rewarding thing about owning a roofing company? And then what is the most challenging thing you see owning a roofing company?

SPEAKER_00

The most rewarding thing was, like I mentioned, I can go on and on about it, is doing these homes for these low-income houses, people that we have been so fortunate to help with. We've done roofs for so many people over the years, I want to say 100 each year or more. Now we're doing these for these people. And that was something that I wanted to make a standard. But after we're done doing these roofs, these people are literally crying, hugging us, and just buying our guys lunch, buying them things and making sure they make goodie bags and things like that. I was like over here, I'm like, I'm a hugger sometimes, but I'm just not ready for these people to come in and be like, hey, I want to give you a hug. I'm so happy. Because they got water coming in the house. Sure. I mean, you think it's a thing that they might not have as a big issue, but if you got water every time it rains, that's such a bad pain that you can't believe you're not just putting a band-aid on, you're fixing the problem, you know, for them.

SPEAKER_03

Right. That's awesome.

SPEAKER_00

And we've been able to do that because of South Carolina Department of Resiliency, these nonprofits that have money that has asked us to be able to be that person to look at these roofs, yeah. And we build up that standard, like I said, what we can do to help them out. We've made that an actual big process of us. So that was what's the most rewarding. What was the second one?

SPEAKER_03

The second one was what is the most challenging thing? Challenging thing. Can I guess before you answer? Go for it. I would think that I would be terrified getting up on a roof like that.

SPEAKER_00

So is it hard to find people that's more comfortable on the roof than I do on the ground? I hear you. I do most of the most of the time. Now I'm getting up in age, though. So I'm turning 43 this year. So it's like, all right, I need to get them on the ground now. So, but yeah, I I can get them on a roof when I feel comfortable and normal because it's something that doesn't make a difference to me. Most challenging thing is for my own personal self, growing. And knowing what is the difference from these new technology things that are coming into our industry. Because that AI glass is like a meta glasses, like I mentioned before, I want to be able to find new ways that are going to help my industry that I don't know of yet. So I'm still developing my own self with the company and not being just one set simple-minded, but growing that to where, okay, what's the next standard? How can I make that? It's challenging to not just stay comfortable because comfort's the enemy sometimes. You get that way and you stay that way. But when you branch out, that's how I moved away from Florida. I branched out and I started this. So that's why I'm like, okay, now let's go do something now. Let's do something else.

SPEAKER_03

I got one for you. Have you got a crazy roofing story you can share with us tonight? Okay, we when we come back, folks, after we take this quick brick, uh, quick well brick. All you have to do is spin it around, make sure it goes around once, like Price is right. Yep. And then you get to draw out a winner.

SPEAKER_01

Awesome.

SPEAKER_03

So, alright. Um, let's talk about that craziest story you have in roofing. Let's let's hear it.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, I'm trying to go through my head, and it's like is it one where anybody's ever fallen off a roof? We've had those an unfortunate man. That's how I moved up here. So I'll go with that. Wow. So whenever I was in Florida, yeah, so I was a roofer, and I was uh on another person's ladder and used their ladder that was jerry-rigged to an actual truss. So when I walked down that truss, I had equipment in my hands, and you're supposed to have three-point contact with a ladder. So I know the safety rules. So when I'm walking down, I don't I kind of have hands, but I kind of don't. And there's no feet on the bottom of that ladder because it was the second part of that uh two-story ladder. So when those feet didn't stay, it kicked. And I I kicked down with it and I dislocated this arm, had bone spurs, and everything like that. So that was when I fell. So it was the craziest thing that happened to me. But fortunate, because what it did, it got me um out of the truck and out of the actual field to move up here and start my own company. Because if I didn't, I'd be roofing still to this day, possibly in Florida. Not to say it's nothing bad about that.

SPEAKER_02

Right.

SPEAKER_00

But it was uh it was a gift and surprise for me to move on within the next venture of my life. So I take it as a blessing in disguise. So God had his hand on me on that way, and I moved in the best direction possible.

SPEAKER_03

The next question is you and I both being business owners. What would your advice be to someone younger than us, of course? Because I don't uh I'm 55, so what would your advice be to somebody that has uh don't know I want to start a business, don't know what I want to do, maybe, don't know if it's the right truck choice, maybe I should go work for somebody else. What would your advice be to someone that's kind of teetering that line and wanting to do their own thing because you have chased your dream with a passion? And you know, you've already mentioned there's nothing else you would rather be doing.

SPEAKER_00

So I would say on a if you wanted to move to that actual venture of being a business owner, you need to have that actual mindset. Is this something you want to have for the long haul? Is this something that can be a career and a job that you can make a living and something that's gonna be an actual standard for your own life that you can create, some some actual foundation that can be something you're gonna be happy with? Because I'm happy with Rufan. I'm loving it. It's been a passion for my whole entire life. But the the South Carolina was the second part that made it better for me. The Southern Hospitality, the people up here, and the fact that the actual hands-on experience, but having that experience is better than anything else you can have. If you go to college, and that's gonna be a venture for you, but I'll tell you, my my actual background was hands-on. I built these roofs with my hands, and I know what to expect, every part of it. So there's nothing that's gonna surprise me because I did it. So I know what to look out for on the back end while they're building it, and I know the the shortcuts on what to watch out for them not to be doing. So I want to make sure we get the right ways on all these roofs.

SPEAKER_03

Can I can I announce what you just said to what you told us today? Can I go ahead and tell you and announce it? Sure. All right, everybody, we gotta give John congratulations. I'm gonna turn it back over to him and let him know the uh he just he just announced to me he's gonna be proposing getting married and getting married in the Philippines. Is that correct? Who's the lucky lady? Tell us a little bit about her. Come on now, it can't be all about John.

SPEAKER_00

Yes, Katrina. She is the one woman that has actually set me down and made it to where my life has been better than anything else. So I'm excited about this new venture in my life because I didn't know I was gonna get married ever again. Right. I thought I was gonna be single, just be happy with myself, and I am. And when you're not looking, that's when it comes and finds you, and I'll find she did, and it it didn't take long. So we're excited for this next part of our life, and I'll be doing that with her. She has been able to make a an actual change in my life, but she makes my life better, and she's been able to make everything more motivated for me to where I don't have to work so hard when I get home. She motivates whenever I'm needing to go to work and see someone else gonna do things like that. So I'm happy to have a partner, you know, and that's what she is for me. So we're excited to do this.

SPEAKER_03

I am congratulating you from the bottom of my heart, and I can't wait to hear the stories about y'all getting married in the Philippines. Yes, and so I can't wait to hear the stories. So you don't think you're gonna get to go away and get married and keep it all secret. Wes is gonna ask us. Because I want to go to the I've never been to the Philippines. I would love to go to the Philippines.

SPEAKER_00

SPEAKER_03

All right, so here we're about to wrap it up, folks, with John tonight. But John, before we do that, I want you to tell people out there, tell the listeners where they can find Phoenix Roofing at, how they can get in touch with you, any information you want to share about anything you want to talk about, the floor is yours to uh to sponsor yourself, talk about yourself a little bit and tell about where people can find you and what services you offer, how to find you on the internet, whatever you want to say. I'll leave it at that.

SPEAKER_00

Let you take the floor.phoenixroofing sc.com. So make sure it's South Carolina, not the Phoenix, Arizona. And then also uh we've got my phone number, 803-727-9382. I'm the direct contact. So whenever you call, I'll be that person you'll be speaking to to get the actual service done. So it's that same day service, if not the next day, for me, majority of the time. And what we do is make sure to take care of every call, one big or small, we nail them all. So that's it. We want to do that. But I'll say that, and then Facebook, Google, uh, you can check us out on that and Instagram. You find us on all the platforms Phoenixroofant SC.com.

SPEAKER_03
