In the meantime, tonight, hey, it's been a beautiful sunny day here in South Carolina, and we have just enjoyed the weather. Um, and so tonight also I'm very privileged to have a friend of mine here in the studio with me. Um, he has a very unique business. Uh, there's a lot of mechanics out there, but I have got Chris Mylom in the studio tonight. Chris, take it away. Tell people a little bit about Mileam Automotive and what you guys do.
SPEAKER_00Well, hello, everybody. Um, I'm the owner of Mileam Automotive. Uh, I've been in business since September of 2025. Um, I'm a 20-year plus master automobile mechanic. Uh I started in the field when I was 18, 19 years old at a junkyard pulling parts. And I was there for, I don't know, maybe a year, year and a half. And then from there, I went to an express loop shop and I learned to change oil, learned to change all the fluids, what to look for, check it all out. Um from there, I ended up working at an independent shop. Uh, worked on just about anything and everything from cars to light duty trucks to heavy duty trucks. That's awesome. Um, everything from oil changes to transmission flushes, did a lot of suspension work, a lot of brake work, um, got into doing engine work and stuff like that. Uh water pumps, general maintenance drive belts, um, oil leaks, um, all the good stuff, the fun stuff. So, but I spent uh about 10 years with that company that was up in Virginia, um, where originally I'm from. And uh my parents were living in South Carolina at the time, and I ended up moving here in 2008. Cool. Um, so from there I ended up getting a job with Lexus.
SPEAKER_03Right.
SPEAKER_00And I started off at Lexus, um, Jim Hudson, Lexus. When it was originally over there off of two-notch road, okay. Right beside uh Richland County Sheriff's Apartment. It's actually a pool table place now. Ah, I gotcha. So, um, but I ended up I was there for maybe three years. Um, ended up moving off and became a service advisor. And uh that was a pretty tough job.
SPEAKER_03Right.
SPEAKER_00You know, that's one of the that can be where you get beat up a lot, isn't it? That is the toughest job at a dealership. I can't tell you how hard that is. I mean, you're dealing with the general public, everybody, and yeah, they will beat you up. Oh, I bet. You know, so um from there, uh I kind of started looking at the Toyota brand, and I was more interested in that. Um, and I ended up getting transferred to Jim Mudson Toyota, the one over there in Irmo. Um, I went back to working on cars. I got you. So I focused on getting my ASCs, which I'm a master ASC automobile mechanic.
SPEAKER_01Congratulations.
SPEAKER_00That's not easy. No, it's a lot of studying, a lot of test work. You got to go through a third-party company, uh, go take tests. Um, and they're not easy.
SPEAKER_01You have to prove yourself.
SPEAKER_00Basically.
SPEAKER_01And so you've got a proven track record, is what you bring to the table. That's awesome.
SPEAKER_00Yep.
SPEAKER_01Um, I I had a question here. What makes your shop different than you that what you think from other shops around? I know you also go out and work on people's cars. Is that true?
SPEAKER_00Sometimes I do. I'm not really into the mobile business because the mobile side of it is more, you know, I gotta pack up my tools and have to haul out and do that route. And, you know, I got probably thirty, forty thousand dollars worth of tools that I've accumulated over the past 20 years, and I don't really want to be riding around with all that stuff.
SPEAKER_01Automotive tools or not cheap.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. You know, snap on, Mac, MacO, mainly what I have in my toolboxes. So, um, but what makes me different is you know, my experience.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Um when I was working for Toyota, I was taught, you know, fix it right the first time.
SPEAKER_02Yep.
SPEAKER_00And fixing it right the first time is very, very important. Um I can't preach on that enough because you know the one thing that really upsets a customer is when they leave the parking lot and their car is still messed up. Right. And they gotta call you back and say, hey, my car still isn't fixed. And you gotta go back and deal with all that. So I'm very thorough with my diagnostics. Yeah, I make sure that I get to the root cause of what's going on. Right. Um that's just the way I was taught and the way I was taught myself to just move forward and go with it.
SPEAKER_03That's good.
SPEAKER_00So um, but I also, you know, I got a lot of training through Toyota. Toyota sent me to school down in Jacksonville for years. Yeah.
SPEAKER_01So you learn how to not just do it, but to do it right. To do it right, yeah, and make sure and double check yourself.
SPEAKER_00Did I only have one teacher, I had a handful of teachers to teach me. Um teach me all the Toyota systems, how they work, and what it boils down to to really figure out a car, what's going on with it. If you know how the system operates and works, right, you can go find out what's really going on with it. Sure. A lot of people don't I'm not gonna say I talk bad about it, but people will not, you know, understand the system, and then they'll just start guessing.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, there's so many people that think that you know, a lot of people think that, you know, they'll go to someone and uh nine times out of ten, you go to somebody, you know, if if you're if you're looking for an oil change or you you never know who's gonna be doing the work.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_01But I think it's really important for people to establish a relationship with a person that not only gets to know you, but they get to know your car. They get to know what they because if they work on it and they're the regular person that works on it, they know what they did last time to that car or have a good pretty good idea. I know you do so many, but yeah, at least you have a good idea. And you know, and and that leads me. I I think it's very important to your business model is knowing not only the cut your cars, but knowing your customers.
SPEAKER_00Yep.
SPEAKER_01So you you might want to, you know, speak to that a little bit and just talk about how you you know how you handle it your customers and what sets you apart customer service-wise.
SPEAKER_00Customer service-wise, I like to be very transparent about what's going on with their vehicle. Right. I'll shoot it straight. Even if they don't like what they hear, it's good for them to hear it. Um, I don't want to beat around the bush or lie to somebody because that just doesn't get you anywhere.
SPEAKER_02Right.
SPEAKER_00Um, you know, it's very important to be honest with them.
SPEAKER_01What would you say people what is what is something that people neglect most about their cars that you see repeat customers for because they're neglecting either maybe an oil change or maybe a tire rotation? Is I mean, and maybe there's more. Maybe, you know, and here in South Carolina, maybe if you can speak to what we actually deal with aside from other states where it's hotter, and maybe you need to charge a refrigerant, make you know, so elaborate on that any way you you'd like to.
SPEAKER_00The the most neglected stuff that I see are probably tires, suspension work, brake work, stuff like that. Um about alignments, those alignments, tire balances, um, those are very, very important to how your tires wear.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Um, you know, it's recommended every 5,000 miles to get your tires rotated. Um, a lot of people will go front to back, back to front, which it's an okay way to do it, but the real way you're supposed to cross them.
SPEAKER_02Right.
SPEAKER_00Um, which keeps the steel wires and the tires, you know, keep them straight and everything, goes that way. Um, as far as balance and alignment goes, you want to do it every, you know, 10 to 15,000 miles, get that stuff checked and done. Um, that will continue to wear your tires evenly and prolong the life of them. A lot of people don't do that, and then you know, you might have a tire that's rated for 50 or 60,000 miles and they're worn out than twenty, thirty thousand miles because somebody neglected them. You know, and they're like, Well, why are they worn out? Aren't they warranted? You don't have any history of you know, showing that you've done your maintenance properly. Right. Um that's one of the big things. Same with oil changes too. People who neglect oil changes.
SPEAKER_01I got a question about oil changes. I know what when I I was my dad always taught me growing up, but I used to change my own oil. I would, you know, get out and I used I was my uh I remember uh Davy Allison drove the Havlin uh car number 28 of us. Yeah, I remember that. I was a big Davy Allison fan. That was you know, that was my guy. Yeah. And um and it was funny because my dad, he was always um uh Bill Elliott fan. Yeah. And so, but my dad, I never will forget, he told me, he says, you know, change your oil every 5,000 miles. Make sure you do that. Yep. And now though, it seems like newer cars, when I bought my new truck, you know, they told me, oh no, you don't know we don't need to see what every 7,000 miles. Is that so maybe you can uh shed some light on my confusion? Is still 5,000 miles the the go-to?
SPEAKER_00The manufacturers have changed it consistently. Um a lot of them go from seven to ten thousand miles is what they recommend. Yeah, because everything's synthetic. So, you know, the synthetic lasts longer, it doesn't break down longer. But the thing you gotta understand about motor oil is that over time, you know, from it heating up, cooling down, oil shear, also gasoline can get in there from the combustion, you know, it'll every now and then pass the rings and get down in there and it'll, you know, deteriorate it. Sure. So it doesn't last as long. Um the other thing is too, you got oil clearance for the bearings, which are down in the crankshaft, the rod bearings, the cam shafts, and all that stuff. And reality how it works is that when that stuff is spinning, it's really not touching the bearings because of the oil pressure and the oil going in there. Right. So when the viscosity, you know, degrades, it doesn't actually protect those bearings like it should.
SPEAKER_02Right.
SPEAKER_00And you'll start getting metal on metal, um, and that's where you get a lot of premature wear from. And your motors won't last as long. So I've always recommended every 5,000 miles, even if you're running synthetic, it might cost you more, but in the long run, the longevity of it, it's gonna save you more. Because I mean, I've seen, you know, vehicles 30, 40, 50, 60,000 miles, and they'll have motor issues because somebody neglected the oil change.
SPEAKER_02Right.
SPEAKER_00You know, and then you're having to put a new motor in it.
SPEAKER_02Sure, absolutely.
SPEAKER_00So it's um I've seen some people, I saw a guy one time when I was at the dealership, he had a Highlander, and he went 55,000 miles without changing the oil. Wow. And it was complete sludge. 55,000 miles.
SPEAKER_01Folks, don't wait 55,000 miles to get your oil changed. So think about that while we take a break. Recognize our uh sponsors. We can't thank you enough to our sponsors out there for making the show happen. We couldn't do it without you. So uh just something to think about, folks. Hey, we got Chris in the uh studio tonight. He's answering some questions for us and uh also letting you know how to take better care of your vehicles and so uh uh a good repair or a maintenance doesn't save you down the road when you've got to replace something. Um so Chris, we're getting ready to come up on summer. Summertime's coming, people are getting traveling more, going to the beach, going to the mountains, so and so. So tell folks what's a good uh what should they do before they take a long trip? What should they go and and you know take a look at, make sure they're okay and safe for their families.
SPEAKER_00I think the most important stuff would be making sure your oil's full, check your transmission fluid level. Tire pressure is a big, big thing too. Um you don't want to travel with low tire pressure because you can actually cause a blowout. Right. What'll happen is is that the side wall will start caving in on itself and then it'll chew itself up on the inside of the tire.
SPEAKER_02Right.
SPEAKER_00Which will cause a blowout. You can get in a wreck and stuff like that. Um you always want to check your tire pressure when they're cold. Right. So um if they're hot, you're gonna get uh higher reading than what they should be. Normally, if you set them most manufacturers recommend anywhere from 32 to 35 PSI. When you get to drive and they get hot, they'll they can go up anywhere from four to six pounds. Oh really. Oh yeah. So check it when it's cold. Check it when it's cold. That's awesome. Yep.
SPEAKER_01And then also there, I'm sure windshield wiper fluid and stuff like that.
SPEAKER_00Wiper fluid, uh wiper blades, especially if you're gonna be going into some range. Nothing worse than having a pair of wiper blades that streak.
SPEAKER_02That's true. Very true.
SPEAKER_00It's me, I have tough times seeing at nighttime, and when it's raining, I like to have a good set of wiper blades on there.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, nighttime driving, the older I get, the worse I can see at night. And I'm like, holy cow, something's going on. You know what I mean? Yeah. It's like almost driving with one eye open. That's right. You know, I say that too loud. They might revoke my license. That's right. But I got uh I wanted to ask you a question. Um, what's your approach to customer service? I know a lot of people, you know, something may be wrong with their car. They keep driving it, that maybe that warning light comes on, and a lot of folks are just nervous about taking their car. They're more, they're more, they're they're not as concerned about that warning light as their nerves than them about taking it to the mechanic because they're afraid of that. You know, tell customers how I mean, tell our listeners out there, you know, how how a mechanic such as yourself eases that and ensures the service that you provide.
SPEAKER_00As long as you're friendly, smile, have a good attitude, be very transparent about what's going on with their vehicle, honest. Um, a lot of people will feel comfortable.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_00You know, don't go in there with an attitude and say, you know, shouldn't be doing this, that, and that. Just like, hey, can I just educate you on what's going on and how we should, you know, you should approach it and let's try something different. Um keep an eye on this, keep an eye on that. We'll we'll make sure that it's fixed right for you and it's safe to drive to wherever you're going or what you're doing. And um, I've learned that's a good way to keep retention, keep people coming back, and um just you know, treat them right.
SPEAKER_01And I like your approach because your approach, you know, is with because not everybody is is I call a get I guess a gearhead, is uh, you know, or or knows a lot about cars.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Um I know enough about how to drive mine, no, change oil, change tire. Lord knows I've changed a few flat tires here in the last few months uh doing what we do. But uh, you know, other than that, there's a lot of people that really uh I my I throw myself in that category. You know, there's a lot to be explained to me or shown to me as to how to, you know, because I uh if I had to take tear out of the engine and rebuild it, I wouldn't know where to start. You know, I've never done anything like that. But there's a lot of people, and and I think it's uh a way you have to talk to somebody that really doesn't understand cars the way, you know, someone who works on them all the time does. So maybe, you know, you know, talk you is uh am I right in saying that?
SPEAKER_00You're absolutely right.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, you really are. And I mean there are people out there who don't know nothing about a car who will try to sell somebody something and it's just it turns sour real quick.
SPEAKER_01That was a question I had. What what what are some of the red flags that people need to watch out for when they choose a mechanic?
SPEAKER_00Um you want to make sure that check their certifications, their credentials, see how long they've been doing it. Also, you can kind of judge if a mechanic's good or not by looking at 'em. You know, if you got somebody that's constantly covered in grease and doesn't keep themselves up and stuff like that, sometimes that can be a red flag. Um if they're not very talkative, you know, they're real quiet. They're just kind of like, leave me alone, let me do my work. That's another red flag right there. So it's always good to just be up front and get to know the person, you know. Um, tell them how it's gonna how it's going, you know, keep them updated with their vehicle. A lot of people I've seen in the past, they won't update their customers, you know, and they'll leave them on the back burner and then the customers call like, hey, what's going on with my car? And then it's like, uh, they're scrambling, you know, I gotta go figure out and blah, blah, blah. So if if you keep them updated, let them know a lot of people are happy with that. Me, I like to send them pictures, sometimes videos, just to show them, hey, this is what we're going on, this is the progress of your car. Um and try to give them a realistic expectation time of when it's gonna be ready.
SPEAKER_01That's awesome. You know, so it's how much has b vehicle technology changed? I mean, I know we see it in everything, but I mean, I I wouldn't know where I mean, I mean, I you can look at a a car back when I was a kid, you opened the car, motor was right there, and you could see the road, you know, you can see down, you can see you look like you had more area to at least get in there and work on it. Yeah you open a car now, and you can't see down to the asphalt through it, and everything's out there. So, I mean, are cars more difficult to work on nowadays, or are they actually easier with technology?
SPEAKER_00It depends on the the brand and the make and stuff like that, the model. Uh some manufacturers like to take a big motor and put it in a very tight spot.
SPEAKER_01Right, right.
SPEAKER_00And it's one of those things where you just learn over time tricks of the trade, how to get it in there and replace stuff and do it that way. Then there are times where you have smaller motors, V6s, and line fours, where you can get in there and you can just do everything right there. But a lot of stuff is covered by engine shields and covers and under shields and all that stuff. And sometimes it takes longer to take all that stuff off than to actually get down into the motor to do what you're doing.
SPEAKER_03Sure.
SPEAKER_00So um that stuff can be frustrating because it's all plastic clips. Right.
SPEAKER_01You go in there, you track more plastic now.
SPEAKER_00A lot more plastic, a lot more plastic clips. And the thing is, is like road grit and debris gets in that stuff. Sure. So sometimes it can be very hard to get them out without breaking them.
SPEAKER_01Yep.
SPEAKER_00And what do you think?
SPEAKER_01What do you think uh the future of automotive industry looks like?
SPEAKER_00I would say it's it's probably gonna stay where it's at. You know, the hybrids are real big, and that's where a lot of it's gonna stay. I know the electric was talked about for a long time, but uh I don't really see electric taking over anytime soon. I really see more. of uh everything's going turbo hybrid now um which gives you great fuel economy gas mileage stuff like that so um and as far as technology goes is it has over the past ten years it has really skyrocketed but you got all these new advanced features like ADOS which is advanced driving assistance systems which is like the radar cruise the lane keep assist um blind spot monitoring um you got cameras everywhere for panoramic views which is really nice my goodness it is it is um it it can really make you become a lazy driver though I will tell you I've driven cars with the radar cruise and used them and then get back into a vehicle that doesn't have the radar cruise and you're driving you're like oh wait a minute I gotta slow down or yeah hit the button or hit the brake or something like that because it does it for you automatically.
SPEAKER_01Fun questions for you if money wasn't an object what car would you drive that's a tough question.
SPEAKER_00It would it would probably have to be some old school muscle car like a Shelby GT500 or a GT forty or something like that.
SPEAKER_01Good choice good yeah you know what I had a cousin one time that had a GTO Nova GTO oh yeah old Pontiac great cars remember and and another what was the what was the car Starski and Hutch Tro the red car with the um what was that Grand Torino or something like that?
SPEAKER_00Yeah it was the Grand Torino that was that was that was that was that was that was a classic right there. That's awesome.

I think she could coach football or probably referee she'll be watching watching the game and she'll be oh tell the she'll get so excited and and she'll be like you know Preston you can tell you can you can back this up she is for a woman for a lady and I'm not knocking ladies I know a lot of that I'm not singling out but my wife knows football a lot better than some of my buddies do. That's awesome.
SPEAKER_00It's kind of cool all right last question here uh favorite color car favorite color car um I've always been black black black has always been black's always classic yeah it's classic exactly yep even though it shows dirt and everything but it's still one of my favorite colors well guess what we've come to Chris we have come to the end of the night is there anything else you'd like to add before we spin the prize wheel or um come see me for all your automotive needs.
